Wedding Moccasins

A couple of months ago, I had the privilege of making wedding moccasins. I had no idea the role they would play in the ceremony and feel so honoured that my moccasins were used in this way.

Here is the story:

"We chose to use moccasins made with love by creatress Jamie Gentry for our Celebration of Love. I believe in what she is doing & creating & that was an important decision in our choice to use moccasins instead of the traditional rings. We needed to honour that we each have our own paths to walk, but that we are committing to walk our paths alongside one another. to help one another up when needed or to encourage from behind and also at times walk side by side. The intention & love for the moccasins is that we want to let each of our steps in our lives and our marriage count. Just as each step we take on the earth counts. Moccasins help connect us more deeply to the earth & to honour an animal by using its hide in this way is humbling & a powerful experience & energy exchange. Here are some photos sharing the ceremony at our celebration of love on September 18th, 2016. A beautiful day where the sun came out, a rainbow appeared, roosters crowed, a cat came to rub up & purr against our legs & we were surrounded by so many beautiful, radiant souls. In these images it shows our young friend who we have mentored & spent many hours with & who has taught us & stretched us & helped us grow by being himself. We asked him to be our moccasin bearer & so he brought them up to us & then we each put them on one anothers feet. Then got up & walked together as husband and wife walking alongside one another on our own paths creating a new path together. Thank you, Jamie for being a powerful part of this important day."

I am speechless, and so full of love and gratitude.

Custom Beaded Horse Moccasins

This was a fun and challenging custom order. I had never done this much beading before. The entire vamp was beaded, with a horse image in the centre.

Woven Leather Moccasins

I am so excited to share my newest design with all of you! Woven leather moccasins with abalone shells!

I was looking for a way to incorporate more West Coast design into my moccasins. After doing some research I discovered that my people did not wear moccasins because it is too damp on the West Coast and the hides would rot, so people mainly went bare foot. But, weaving cedar bark was common,  not just for baskets, but for hats and clothing as well, so I decided to take that idea and translate it into moccasin designs. Weaving the leather and adding abalone for a very West Coast flare.

This is batch is headed to Manitobah Mukluks.

The Shopping Channel

When Manitobah Mukluks accepted me as a Storyboot artist, I was so excited, and thought this is the most amazing opportunity. I also felt pretty certain, this was the peak of great things to happen. While what I wasn't expecting was that Manitobah would then feature my moccasins on Style Matters with Jeanne Beker on The Shopping Channel, alongside two of the MOST talented mukluk makers and beaders.

I was floored when I heard about it, and actually didn't share this information with anyone, because apart of me didn't believe it would actually happen, but it did!!

So finding out my moccasins would be on The Shopping Channel was exciting enough, but then to tune in and see that Canadian fashion icon and host of Fashion Television (which I watched avidly growing up) Jeanne Beker was the host!!! That just blew my mind! I was in tears!

Here is Waneek saying some very lovely things about my moccasins.

Here they are! On live TV!!!

This is me watching my mocc's on TV with tears running down my face, which is why I refused to look at the camera.

Life continues to amaze and bless me with so many wonderful gifts! I am looking forward to the next big, beautiful and wonderful thing to happen :)
